The term "diet" can be discouraging for many due to the restrictive and rigid way it is often discussed. However, eating for well-being has a different meaning and can promote better, long-term habits.
Regardless of the term used or specific goal (longevity, weight management, energy, etc.), many assume an ultra-strict regimen is the fastest way to achieve it. But, flexibility might be more beneficial. According to behavioral sustainability scientist Michelle Segar, Ph.D., author of *The Joy Choice*, flexibility is key.

Why practice flexible restraint on weekends?

When it comes to nutrition, there is no place for "shoulds" and "should nots." Ultimately, do what feels best for your health and happiness. However, research suggests that restricting flexible eating on weekends may not be the best way to maintain a healthy weight. Segar suggests practicing "flexible restraint."
Research supports Segar's point: One study found that participants who dieted strictly during weekends had a higher chance of regaining lost weight over a year compared to those with less strict dieting on weekends and holidays.
Another study found that flexible restraint was associated with more weight loss and better maintenance, while rigid restraint resulted in less weight loss.
Does this mean completely abandoning healthy eating on weekends? Not necessarily. Researchers suggest that practicing flexible restraint on weekends may reduce boredom related to food, which often leads to diet lapses. This means that treating yourself on the weekend (in moderation) may prevent boredom and prevent abandoning the diet altogether.
