Natural Hydration Elixir: Daily Sip for Health
What helps you drink enough water? Some people prefer a water bottle that keeps their H₂O ice cold, while others need a straw to be motivated to drink enough liquids. Some even add a hint of flavor to boost their motivation.
But what drinks, besides plain water, offer hydration benefits? According to holistic health coach Muneeza Ahmed, coconut water might be the most underrated hydrator out there. And you don't have to drink it alone to reap its benefits.
We will discuss the health benefits of this beverage and provide some recipes to try.
The Advantages of Coconut Water
Holistic health coach Muneeza Ahmed describes coconut water as a "hydration superstar" for many reasons beyond just quenching your thirst. Here are some notable benefits:
- It's versatile: Some enjoy coconut water on its own, but not everyone. Luckily, it can be used as a base in countless recipes to minimize the flavor while still reaping its benefits.
Choosing the Best Coconut Water
Like any item out there, be mindful when shopping for coconut water.
According to Ahmed, the pink color you see in many coconut water beverages may indicate sugar oxidation. When coconut water is exposed to air, warm temperatures, or other ingredients, or when it's been on the shelf for a while, it may turn pink.
While it's not necessarily a bad thing, if you're looking for the freshest and purest coconut water, consider choosing a clear or lighter pink option compared to those with intense coloring.
Ahmed also recommends avoiding added flavors or preservatives like ascorbic acid (although many beverage companies need to use natural preservatives to maintain freshness).
To find the freshest and purest coconut water, look for "100% pure coconut water" on the label as the only ingredient, says Ahmed. One recommended coconut water is Iberia Foods Coconut Water.
If you're up for a DIY project, crack open a coconut and extract the water yourself. Be sure to use the pulp in other cooking endeavors to minimize food waste.
