Rice Cakes: The Truth Revealed
Rice cakes became popular diet food during the low-fat, high-carbohydrate trend of the late 1980’s and 1990’s, as people believed they were a low-calorie alternative to cookies and crackers.
While they are low in calories, at about 35 calories each, rice cakes lack essential nutrients, such as fat, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. This can actually hinder weight loss as these nutrients contribute to satiety and prevent cravings.
Rice cakes are primarily refined carbohydrates that are quickly digested and converted into sugar, leading to a high glycemic index of 82. This can cause blood sugar spikes, leaving you feeling sluggish and craving more food, potentially even more rice cakes.
Instead of choosing rice cakes as a snack, opt for options rich in healthy fats, protein, and fiber.
- A whole grain wrap with peanut butter and sliced banana
- Greek yogurt sprinkled with granola and berries
- Hummus with veggies and a serving of pita chips for dipping
- A 1-ounce (28g) serving of almonds and a small piece of fruit
- 100% whole grain toast topped with a sliced hard boiled egg, avocado and a sprinkle of salt & pepper
If you still crave rice cakes, opt for plain ones and add your own healthy toppings. A tablespoon of almond butter and fresh peach slices make a nutritious and flavorful snack.
